Buffy's was originally going to be called the
Mardle Hall Brewery, but complaints from another brewery led to the change to Buffy's,
after a former resident of Mardle Hall, who liked his beer.
The brewery is run by Head
Brewer Roger Abrahams and his partner Julie Savory - Roger is a home brewer of 25 years
standing who worked for Norwich Union but had long dreamt of brewing commercially. Duncan
Walker is the Brewery Manager.
Julie, a piano tuner, was so impressed
when she tried a pint of Roger's beer after tuning his piano that the two married. Roger
threw in his job and, after a year sourcing the equipment for the brewery, the first
firkins were sold in November 1993.
Julie still tunes pianos occasionally
but says that brewing is more lucrative: 'in the time it takes to tune one piano, you can
sell 50 firkins', she says. The brewery is working flat out to meet orders and intends to
start bottling its beers (when there is time!).
Visitors are welcome any time throughout
the year by prior arrangement, except for December. A tour of the brewery costs £5 per
person; disabled visitors and children are welcome.

Around and About the

The timber framed house in about 1992 before
we had started the brewery - quite smart!
